Civil Rights

Civil Rights and the First Amendment

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” —Amendment I, U.S. Constitution

The scope of the First Amendment is staggering. From politics to protests, the First Amendment touches individuals in any number of ways. The Civil Rights Section brings together a diverse group of experts to explore the First Amendment and its intersection with civil rights. Start with an overview of the First Amendment, followed by a discussion of the effects of the amendment on political speech and lobbying. First Amendment discrimination claims and protestor rights are examined, as well as whistleblowing claims and defenses. Finish the day by learning what the First Amendment means to public employees and higher education after Garcetti v. Ceballos.
